(Under construction) Karnaphuli Tunnel-aka - Bonghobondhu sheik Mujibor Rahman Tunnel- The First Shield Tunnel in Bangladesh & South Asia. The round shape Twin Tunnels are mine method construction under the Karnaphuli River which is 3315m Long. Top of Tunnel is 34m below from the Mean Sea Level and 20m below at River Bed. The river where it is crossed by the Tunnel is 1240m wide. The sub fluvial project will connect the Rivers West Bank (Patenga) and East Bank (Dhaka-Chittagong-Coxs Bazar Highway).

Bangladesh is a riverine country. Karnafuli river divides Chittagong city into two parts. On one side are cities and ports and on the other side are heavy industrial areas. 3 (three) bridges have already been built over the river Karnafuli, which is not enough for the existing large number of vehicles. Due to the morphological features of the river, sedimentation in the bottom of the Karnafuli river is a major problem and a major threat to the functioning of the port of Chittagong. To deal with this sedimentation problem, it is necessary to build a tunnel under the Karnafuli river without building any more bridges. To this end, the government has decided to build a tunnel under the Karnafuli river to connect the two parts of Chittagong district. Chittagong is the main seaport and largest commercial city of Bangladesh. Import and export activities of most of the countries are conducted through Chittagong port located at the mouth of Karnafuli river. The proposed tunnel will connect Chittagong Port City directly with the other part of the Karnafuli River and indirectly with the rest of the country through the Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway. The width of the river at the proposed tunnel site is 600.00 m and the water depth is 9-11 m. The length of the proposed tunnel is 3400 meters.
