It is one of the largest schools in the Barisal division and one of the oldest schools in all of Bengal. At present in Barisal Zilla School, morning and day classes are taught from class three to class ten.

The school has a long history. It was founded by an Englishman, N. W. Garret, on 23 December 1829 with only 8 students.

Historical background of Barisal Zilla School. Barisal Zilla School. is one of the best schools in Bangladesh and it is the first high school in Barisal Division. The school has a long historical background. The school was founded by Mr. N. W. Garret on December 23, 1829 with only 8 students. The then the name of the school was BARISAL ENGLISH SCHOOL. The first Headmaster of the school was Mr. John Smith and the first teacher from Bengal was Babu Tanuram Lahiri .From 1853 – 1891 the school was directed under government management as Barisal Zilla School. In 1892 the then government was bound to declare the school as a Non-Government School for the movement of the some other teachers of Non- Government Schools in Barisal and was renamed as BARISAL ENGLISH SCHOOL. But in 1906 it was once again brought under government management and once again it got the name BARISAL ZILLA SCHOOL. At that time the school building was in the land of Mr. Lucas just right at the west side of the Protestant Church. As the then Governor of Bengal opined the school as a unhygienic one, Mr. Barton founded the then school building at present location. In 1991 the school started its two shifts – Morning Shift and Day shift. At present, there are 54 teachers and 2300 students in this school. The students do outstanding performance in all public Exams like – PSC, JSC and SSC. Considering all these, the school is a unique one.
