"Getting my first design internship was incredibly exciting. Although I was certainly excited, I was also remarkably nervous. Partly because I had absolutely no idea what to expect as well as what they expected from me. It’s easy to get wrapped up into the details of day-to-day tasks and projects, but I’ve also realized the value of immersing myself in the workplace culture. At Youth Opportunities, it really doesn’t matter what title you have. If you want to participate in a project you can. Proactivity is celebrated. Supervisors are not looking down on you, they are on your side and even cheering for you. I was a little shy to reach out at first, because I didn’t want to “bother” anyone. However, after a couple of high-quality conversations, I realized that my seniors actually enjoyed talking about their journeys, giving advice, and discussing design trends with me. It is important to consider who we are designing for, what they care about, get feedback from them, and iterate. I’ll continue to leverage my communication skills, to communicate my designs to a wider audience. When someone asks me about my internship, I’ll first tell them about my team and fellow interns. These people will continue to be my colleagues, friends, and mentors. They make up the most memorable part of this experience, and I know I’ll continue to go to them for career advice, candid feedback, or playful conversation. In conclusion, there’s still so much to learn! Shoutout to everyone I got the pleasure to work with at YO for some memorable Autumns."
