The department was first established in 1958 by the former East Pakisthan government as East Pakistan Inland Water Transport Authority (EPIWTA). It was established for overall control, management, and development of inland water transports in the entire region. This agency was introduced on October 31, 1958 with the ordinance called the East Pakistan Inland water Transport Authority Ordinance 1958 (E.P. Ordinance, NO LXXV of 1958). Later the government appointed three constituted authority of this institution on November 4, 1958. After independent of Bangladesh this department was named as Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority. Today, an appointed advisory committee advise in respect of all related development, maintenance, and operations of inland water transport and of inland waterways in Bangladesh. বাংলাদেশ অভ্যন্তরীণ নৌ-পরিবহন কর্তৃপক্ষ (তবে এর ইংরেজী সংক্ষেপ বি.আই.ডব্লিউ টি.এ নামে বেশি পরিচিত) বাংলাদেশ সরকারের একটি স্বায়ত্তশাসিত সংস্থা, যে দেশের অভ্যন্তরীণ নৌ চলাচল নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে। এটি নৌ পরিবহন নিয়ন্ত্রণ ও উন্নয়ন সহ নৌযান সমূহের জন্য বিভিন্ন আইন ও নীতিমালা প্রণয়ন, অনুমোদন, নিবন্ধন ইত্যাদি কাজের জন্য দায়িত্বপ্রাপ্ত। ঢাকার মতিঝিলে এর প্রধান কার্যালয় অবস্থিত।
It's an autonomous organization of the Bangladesh Govt. A ten storied building is situated on Motijheel, near Motijheel Police Station,with good decoration including security. According to the direction of Govt. this office takes very effective steps on water transportation with its' potential staffs which is good for our country.
It’s a autonomous governing body. This bhaban is ten storied and top floor have prayer and conference room. This Bhaban situated beside the Motijheel thana.
Some of biggest thieves work in this place. Without bribery even air doesn't circulate here. But sometimes they arrange workshop here for free of cost , Those are really helpful.
